Finding time for playAutumn Teacher's Conference, April 2022
Enka School, Istanbul, Türkiye Co-Led with Berna Tufekçioğlu, Math Teacher Play is not just for children - in fact, finding time for play in our content areas classrooms can provide students with time to experiment by applying knowledge in different ways or to approach a problem from different angles. Play can come in different forms: in English class it might be playing with syntax or finding the meaning of a particular symbol; in Math, it might be the challenge to prove a formula with nothing but a foldable and the knowledge you bring into it. No matter what, play deepens students’ understanding of course material while simultaneously providing opportunities for building schema and transferring knowledge. This session will share research and examples, and it will ask teachers to work side-by-side to design a playful lesson which can be used in class immediately.
